Site Map

Did you ever feel the need to take the child in your life to somewhere fun but nurturing, exciting but safe, and innovative but warm and inviting?  Bookworm Gardens, a new organization with the unique concept of a children’s garden based on children’s literature is setting out to accomplish just such a marvelous place.  Bookworm Gardens invites the community to share experiences, explore and learn about the natural world, be creatively inspired, and visit sites of the imagination.  Bookworm Gardens supports the countywide focus on family activities and tourism by providing an additional engaging local attraction which interprets the love of earth and the satisfaction of reading a good book.  The creation of Bookworm Gardens, in the city of Sheboygan, will promote a beautiful, healthy alternative to life in an urban environment.

An innovative children’s garden, Bookworm Gardens is the only one of its kind, adding new dimensions to Sheboygan County.  Seven different garden areas organized by concept: Culture and Language, the Forest, the Prairie, the Farm and Garden, the Pond, Wetland and Stream, Art Expression,  and Fantasy and Memory  feature interactive activities with reading material supporting each garden space.  For example, the farm and garden area represents special aspects of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie and the Iroquois Nation.  A native Wisconsin prairie will contain a covered wagon and a sod house.  In addition, various agricultural plants including corn, beans, and squash will be grown honoring the book In the Three Sisters GardenEducational activities in this area will demonstrate where some of the produce bought in the stores actually comes from including hands on planting, harvesting and food preparation.  Other activities include journaling and the ability to experience what living in a sod house and traveling in a covered wagon was like.  The garden has many diversified natural elements offering a variety of recreational opportunities, some of which may be organized while the majority of the areas have “free” play value.
